Comfort Food

You arrive home after a bad day at work, getting soaked to the bones in the torrential downpour outside; you are tired, thirsty, hungry and bad humoured.
You walk towards the fridge and open it. Oh no, there is no beer. Things are going from bad to worse.
You stick your head in closer and scan the other parts of the fridge, including the freezer, hoping to find some other beverage or food that will be the remedy to your overall unimpressive day.
A few of things you see:

1) Leftover bacon from this morning’s breakfast

2) Leftover salad from yesterday’s dinner

3) Big slice of apple pie

4) Cake from your birthday party

5) Leftover Chinese food from god-knows-when

6) A tub of vanilla ice cream and a tub of rocky-road ice cream

“Score,” you say as you reach out to grab your food of choice. Because you know after you finish eating it, you will feel that much better – or at the very least, feel that much fuller.

Here are a few questions for discussion.
What is your comfort food?
Under what circumstances or in which situations do you need comfort food?
Does food make you feel better?
Do you feel guilty after gorging on comfort food?
What are your thoughts an comfort foods?

That has to be a day that we all have had!

Comfort food...To me it is something that takes you back in time. I always think of things my grandma used to make. My favorite has to be simple home made macaroni and cheese. :)

The circumstances that I need comfort food...on a cold rainy day. I don't know why but the weather always affects what I eat. And what makes me feel better, is the process of making the food, not just eating it!

I used to think of comfort foods as chocolate and junk food, but there to me there is no joy in just gorging on food. The fun/comfort/joy comes from preparing it.

However...there were those nights that I came home to find a fridge with no beer, so the second best thing was eating a pint of ice cream!

Spag Bol always does the trick for Comfort food. I agree with Jessie...something that takes you back in time. Spag Bol has always been a delicious staple of my diet.
Also I would forget the beer altogether.
I have always said that in my business (the wine trade) one of the advantages is that if you have a good day you can go home and open a decent bottle of wine. If you have a bad day then you can go home and open a decent bottle of wine.BUT if you have a really awful day you must go home and open a really expensive bottle of wine.......who needs therapy?

My sister calls this type of food "Mommy food"

It would have to be mashed potatoes with gravy for me! Or perhaps homemade chicken noodle soup.
And no their is no guilt involved, I think the words guilt and food should never be used together!

In my mind comfort food is always warm, not too spicy (comfort food would never upset your stomach)
and have a familiar smell while cooking.
