The joy of…autumn

To be honest, it’s not my favourite time. In fact, I find it really rather depressing.

Autumn

The heating is on again (and it seems to suck down oil at an alarming rate), the days are getting shorter and the garden looks a mess. There…

I really love these beautiful red fruits – from the sweetest cherry right up to the monstrous beefs. They are just so…

School dinners for grown-ups

Don’t know about you, but my experience of school food is pretty grim.

Initially in Scotland (I can smell the Haggis now), then at a large boarding school in the English midlands, the fare was pretty unappetising, unappealing and unpalatable. How things have changed.…

Meaty Goodness - Spezzatino (Stewed Pork)

There is nothing better on a cool autumn Sunday evening than walking

into the kitchen, welcomed by the glow of the fireplace and the rich

smells of meaty goodness: a pot slowly simmering on the back

burner with stewed meat, falling apart ready to top thick golden

polenta. This is a "stick to your ribs" hearty dinner perfect for the

fall & winter.…

Florida food fest

Last week I was lucky enough to spend a few days in sunny south Florida. Flew into Miami (the meal on the plane was more than acceptable) then drove the 70 miles or so north to West Palm Beach.

As you’d expect, the weather was perfect (low humidity, no thunderstorms, just endless blue sky). Surprisingly, the food was pretty good too.…
