Italian Sloe Liquor: A Recipe for a Rare & Exquisite Digestivo (After Dinner Drink)

Our woods are filled with plump deep blue sloe (blackthorn) berries, prugnole (or in local dialect brugnole). With stained sticky fingers, I gather them just in the nick of time during the late fall, waiting for…

Irony is a funny thing.

Irony is a funny thing. I am quite a funny thing too. I’m a 22 year old, white woman who spends her day thinking and writing about wine, something I have no real or honest clue about. You could pass me a vat of vinegar and a flute of something French and I would be able to tell you little, or nothing about why they are different, why one has terrior (great word isn’t it?) and why one is for chips. Yet, it is my daily bread and butter to turn words into wine. Now that’s…

Best Wine Game Ever - It's Time For Ting!

It's Time For Ting!

I come from a very large household just presently. Since moving to Cape Town four years ago, I've lived with many interesting people, on my own, with family, my boyfriend and for sporadic short spurts in New York and London.

Right now I share a commune with sixteen other super people and we all enjoy getting together and socialising either in the…

Italy set for smaller wine output, good quality seen

Italian wine quality is expected to improve as volume falls slightly this year after farmers dug up vines, encouraged by incentives from the European Union, research showed.

Italy's wine output is expected to fall 1 percent to just above 4.5 billion liters, farmers' research center ISMEA said in a statement after its joint research with wine industry body Unione Italiana Vini (UIV).

The quality…

Australia to use EU wine label system

ADELAIDE, Australia, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Australia has signed an agreement with the European Union to stop labeling Australian wine with names such as burgundy,

port and claret.

In exchange, Australian wine makers will have protection for 112 of its "geographical indicators" such as Barossa and Coonawarra, the Wine and Brandy Corp., the government agency in charge of wine production, announced in a…

A Perfect Picnic On The Beach

My husband and I recently celebrated our anniversary. It is amazing to reflect back on a life that started as a couple, grew into a family and now is in the thick of tag teaming raising a child. We've shared such a full, fun-packed ride. But this is not a Hallmark card so let's move on....

I was looking through a MINI Cooper magazine my father gave me when I came across an article on picnics… Continue

Raise a glass! Wine is good for you

Is wine good for you? In moderation and as part of an overall healthy diet, the answer is yes, writes Stella Nakakande.

Among other things, the French are known for their wine drinking culture. For every meal, there is a glass of wine. It has often been said that for men, it is recommended they have not more than two…

Almost But Not Quite

My husband brought me a couple bottles of Pinot Noir back from a recent trip he took to Vancouver, British Columbia. And if you're thinking it, you're right.....he is a good man.

I have to say, I've not heard much hype about Pinot Noirs from Canada (or any for that matter) but was hopeful as I've tasted a few good wines from our northern… Continue

Who Knew...A Shoe!

Now here is an interesting way to open a bottle of wine (complements of YouTube - who else)!

I was just curious enough to try this myself. After studying the video I gave it a try but my bottle just wouldn't open. I thought maybe for some peculiar reason it was because I was trying to open a white wine. So I went back to my wine stash and this time grabbed not only a red, but a French red thinking maybe the French bottle their wine specifically so it can be opened with a shoe. Maybe… Continue

A Very Nifty Wine Gadget

I was roaming the streets of Montalcino on a very blustery, cold January day when I stopped in a restaurant for lunch. As I settled into the warmth of the restaurant, I discovered something spectacular. At a nearby table, the waiter was pouring a glass of wine for a customer using the coolest gadget I'd ever seen! It attached to the wine bottle much like a cork stopper but had an almost Medusa like… Continue
